Absolutely perfect conditions on the water today. This morning we saw several small pods making their way north and pod hopped our way 8ml offshore to where two whales were putting on a great display. We saw an awesome breach, followed by pec slaps and head lunges. A third whale joined them briefly but didn’t stick around. We decided to call him Larry Leg-it. We spotted another pod and were heading towards it when Larry came racing up beside us. He was doing about 10 knots. He was pod hopping so fast that a bow wave was coming off his head. He must have been in a hurry.
The highlight of the morning was on our return trip, when, just 4 mile from shore, we came across a mother and her beautiful new baby. The calf was very inquisitive and came right up to the boat. It attempted to do some head lunges, pec slaps and tail slaps right on top of its mother. The relaxed mum didn’t seem to mind and spent the next 20mins watching her baby play on the surface only 20m away from us.
This afternoon we headed towards Old Woman Island where we had seen a mother and calf earlier and were rewarded with not 1, but 3 mothers with their brand new babies. One of the mothers brought her calf over to the boat by nudging it with her head. We decided to shut off the engine and drop the hydrophone in the water and were blown away with the beautiful, clear singing of a nearby male. We had an amazing close encounters with the new babies who were very interested in us.
We left Old Woman Island and found a mother travelling with an escort and a brand new baby no older than 3 days. The baby tried to do a breach but couldn’t quite execute the maneuver, turning it into more of a head lunge with a splash.
