This morning we had clear conditions and good visibility. The whales were elusive to begin with, taking up the opportunity to relax with the mild sea conditions. We came across a few pods just cruising along the coast. We saw a pod of 2 whales who were playing on the surface and showed us some great peduncle throws.
This afternoon we saw our first pod of whales as soon as we rounded Point Cartwright and came across a pod of 2 whales just 3nm off shore. We had a close encounter with a sub adult who was inquisitive, swimming right up to the boat and cruising alongside us. We spotted two pods of two whales tail slapping on the surface and headed towards Caloundra. A pod of 2, a mother and her yearling, had very active surface time so we turned the engines off and they came right up to the bow of the boat. They must have liked the reaction they got from our guests because they put on a spectacular show with multiple breaches, peduncle throws, pec slapping, waving and belly roll overs. The mother looked like she was teaching her young one how to breach and we were rewarded with 20-30 breaches right beside the boat. An awesome afternoon on the water.
