This morning the seas were fairly flat with 10 knots of breeze and a slight chop on the water. We spotted a mother and calf about 3 miles North-East of Pt. Cartwright, the calf was having a great time playing. Practicing his breaching as he breached several times, mum threw some peduncle throws and tail slaps alongside baby and they came reasonably close to the boat. We then spotted a pod of 2 southbound whales near the HMAS Brisbane who weren’t very sociable but did show us some big fluke up dives. As we headed in shore we saw a green turtle and another couple of whales about 2 miles off Mudjimba Island who were cruising north lazily with plenty of fluke up dives.
In the afternoon the seas were calm with just a light breeze and we found our first two whales about 5 miles East of Pt. Cartwright. They started out with down times of 8-10 minutes but these decreased to about 5 minute down times as they grew to trust us. Then the two showed off with a perfectly timed double breach! Head lunges or chin slaps and pectoral slaps were also seen. They then mugged the boat for about 10 minutes and performed pectoral slaps right beside the boat. On the way back in we saw another pod of 2 in the distance however they weren’t particularly interested in coming to play, we then saw about half a dozen common dolphins who had a calf with them which was a lovely treat for the passengers on Whale One this afternoon.
