Today we spotted the whales in nice and close, at only 1 mile off Point Cartwright! The first pod spotted was a mother, calf and escort which we followed for most of the trip. The calf was pretty playful doing some pec slaps, tail throws and tail slaps. Some times the calf tried to come in for a close encounter, but Mum and escort were a little wary and wouldn’t let it get too close. The adults made a couple of big splashes for us too.
There was also a pod of about a dozen dolphins swimming with these whales and coming in close to the boat.
On our way back in we encountered another pod, again at about 1 mile East of Point Cartwright. The whale highway was certainly busy today! This pod was another mother, calf and escort which came in for a few close encounters. Another few dolphins were swimming along with these guys too!
Conditions today were a bit windy at 10-15 knots SW to start off with, dropping down to 5-10 knots after about a half hour. There was a slight swell and a little bit of choppy water.
