This morning was great weather, 5km SE wind and 1/8 cloud. Located first pod within 5 minutes of departing Mooloolah bar, and within 1nm of Point Cartwright. First up we had Mother, bull and calf within pod, mother was very clean and non-scarred. Calf was playful and shadowing mother, we got a few pectoral fin slapping and tail flukes. Then we tracked 5nm offshore to locate second pod, also mother, bull and calf. This pod was much friendlier and inquisitive, coming within 10m of the vessel several times as we hovered with engines off. Showing white belly undersides and full frontal profiles.
This afternoon continued great weather, 10kn NE sea breeze and less than 0.5m swell. Wild One shadowed Whale One sister ship to quickly locate first pod of 2 sub-adult males, approx. 12m in length. Amazingly friendly and curious, they followed us for 30 mins, diving under the boat and surfacing on the other side. Displaying very natural and unbashful behaviour, they pectoral fin slapped and wallowed on the surface.
Second pod was found towards Moffat Beach, Caloundra and again the pod was fond of “people watching” just as much as our interest in watching them.
Great visibility and clear skies made today an unforgettable experience. Come and join us for a day on the water and see these magnificent marine mammals up close.
