This morning we came across 3 pods quite close together. We were 3nm off the coast, just south of Mt Coolum when we spotted a mother and her calf practicing their breaching. The mother had some unusual and very beautiful markings. She had a hooked dorsal fin and very dark markings all over her body. The white underside of her tail had a black line all around it making her very easy to identify. Both mother and calf had good surface time and showed us some great fluke up dives.
This afternoon we were only 2nm off Old Woman Island and it didn’t take long for us to be rewarded with a very active pod of two adult whales. The whales were head lunging and breaching for over 40 minutes and came right up to the boat, launching themselves out of the water on our port side, much to the delight of our passengers. We came back via Old Woman Island and saw some of the resident turtles.
