This morning we spotted a large whale doing 2 massive breaches and a head lunge very early in our trip. We headed 3nm south of Mooloolaba and found 2 pods of whales. As we approached, a third pod came over and the three pods swam near our boat for 45mins. We saw some impressive fluke up dives showing us the ‘fingerprint’ on the underside of their tail.
On our return trip, about 8nm east of Mooloolaba, we came across a competition pod of 4 large adults. One large whale showed us a very interesting manoeuvre multiple times where it stuck its tail straight up out of the water and waved it around. It was like a reverse spy hop. This whale had a lot of white on its underside flowing high on the sides, almost to the dorsal fin, making it easy to identify. We had a great close encounter with this pod to finish our day.
