The visibility today was stunning and, with a gentle westerly breeze, the seas were nice and calm. This morning we were just 1nm east of Old Woman Island when we spotted a very unique looking new mum and her adventurous calf. The mother had almost no dorsal fin, making her very recognisable. She was very comfortable with our boat, swimming up close to us and relaxing nearby. Her calf was practicing his acrobatics with some spectacular head lunges, breaches and tail flukes for over an hour. It was playing happily beside the boat and swimming past the bow. We turned 300m to our left and came across a pod of 2 adults breaching within 50 meters of our boat for over half an hour.
This afternoon we saw a competition pod of 6 adults. 1 single female was spoilt for choice with 5 males all fighting for her attention. She took a fancy to our boat and came right up to us, mugging our boat for over an hour. We had an awesome close encounter with her as she rolled over and showed us her belly and then stuck her tail in the air and waved it at us. The boys were getting jealous of us and tried to get her attention by singing and splashing on the surface. We shut off the engines and put the hydrophone in the water to listen to their beautiful song.
A 10/10 day.
