Sea conditions today were a 2 meter easterly swell and 5-10 knots of easterly breeze, we found the whales about four miles East southeasterly of Point Cartwright. We had very close encounters with a pod of two, they were zig-zagging all over the place around the boat and one rolled over onto its back and came up next to the boat to check us out.
Next we came upon a pod of three whales, a mother, calf and last years calf (now a juvenile/sub-adult and acting as escort for mum and the new baby). More close encounters with the three coming within 30 meters of the boat and showing off with big fluke up dives. While we were with this pod there was another pod of two only a couple of hundred meters away performing fluke up dives today.
There were so many whales out today we lost count of all the blows that were seen around us, all in that area 4 to 5 miles off Point Cartwright. We spent nearly two hours with the whales in total and had a happy lot of passengers as we returned to the Wharf in the sunshine.
