The whales spent a lot of time earlier in the week fighting the rough seas and strong currents so the calmer sea conditions this weekend are a relief to them as well as us! There was a lazy swell today and no wind to speak of. This morning we saw a single whale traveling North run into another single who was going South, the two had a brief tussle before going on their separate ways, peduncle throws and fluke up dives were seen from both individuals.

This afternoon we saw a single whale first who performed fluke up dives but didn’t come too near the boat, we also saw two leatherback turtles which was an unusual treat. We also followed a mother, calf and escort for about 40 minutes as they stayed on the surface for close encounters. The three performed fluke up dives and some half-hearted peduncle throws and a spy hop. The whales were rather lazy today and we suspect they’re tired after the rough weather of the week, however it was still a lovely experience to have these gentle giants within 30 meters of the boat and on the surface checking us out.
