Sea conditions were calm today. We saw plenty of dolphins! We spotted a mother and her calf, about 4-5 weeks old, 6 miles out and followed them for about 20 minutes as they performed fluke updives and peduncle throws. For the next half an hour we followed, the pair breached and the calf showed off his upside down and right side up tail slaps, while the mother performed peduncle throws.
A single whale joined them, then shortly after another single whale showed up and the pair began to push and shove each other. Two more whales arrived and it became a competition pod, which we watched for an hour as they pushed and shoved each other around and displayed aggressive behaviour. The calf, however was completely oblivious to their antics and playfully showed off for us some more by rolling over and doing pectoral slaps and more tail slaps!
