On the 7am trip we had calm seas – only a metre of swell. We saw 8 whales, mothers and calves, who were quite evasive but did perform some tail throws. We spotted a pod of 6 further out with the calves doing some displays.
Our midday trip brought short swell and approximately 7 knots of wind. Lovely weather! We saw 5 whales at first, a mother and her calf, and then a mother, calf and escort. We had a few close encounters with the first pod, and the escort of the second pod performed some tail slapping and big peduncle throws very close to the boat with a damaged tail fluke. We also saw heaps of other whales, about 10 pods with too many to count.
