On Wednesday morning’s trip we saw 2 pods each consisting of a mother and calf. We had several close encounters with the first pod and watched the mother in the second pod swimming along with graceful fluke up dives. The breeze came up to about 12 knots of north-easterly so there was a little bit of chop on the water.
The afternoon trip had similar conditions with the 10-12 knots of north-easterly wind still blowing and some chop. The first pod we came upon was of 2 mothers and their calves. One calf was playing with tail slaps, pectoral slaps, breaches and head lunges while mum watched over. The other mother showed off a few lazy pectoral slaps before they split up and all went quiet. We saw another single whale, however with 15 minute down times he wasn’t particularly sociable.
Mothers and calves were certainly the order of the day!
