This morning we spotted 3 pods of 2 whales about 5 miles off-shore, we picked one of the pods to follow and were rewarded with plenty of fluke updives, a peduncle throw and several close encounters. We saw other pods around us but kept with the pod we were already following.
For sea conditions, we had about a metre of swell and a bit of chop, winds picked up to around 12 knots. We ended up quite a long way south, so heading back in now!
This afternoon was quite rough but that didn’t deter the sea life! We spotted a couple of pods really close to each other, one a mother, calf and escort and then the second 2 adult whales a few miles North East of Point Cartwright. We saw the calf of the first pod do some tail throws and a few close encounters, but this pod was indecisive on which direction they were going so we followed the second pod. These 2 performed tail slaps, peduncle throws and a couple of close encounters. We also saw a leopard shark swimming beside the boat for a few minutes. Exciting!
