The second day for our earlier start of 0900 saw the wind up more than forecast – a steady 20 knot southerly had it a bit cooler and bumpier than expected. Not to worry, the whales certainly didn’t!
The three male whales we found after half an hour were aggressively showing each other who was best with breaching, head lunges and peduncle throws. It quickly become obvious why when our three whales became five when they joined a female with her calf from last year. Mating rituals were obvious although most activity was now underwater.
Another breaching pod of three whales was seen a mile off but we stayed with ours for the trip and enjoyed the company.
Forecast is for stronger winds tomorrow so will be possibly cancelled.
